Recent decades have been marked by secularisation at the expense of open discussion of faith, spirituality and religiosity. Yet, in truth, everyone has a world view, whether or not they chose to label it. The big tech companies have generally tried to ignore the needs of people of faith and many such adherents have felt marginalised. But religion and religiosity are not going to disappear. Then we must take seriously, as has been said many times, that there will be no peace in the world without peace between religions. We need social media, especially social networking sites, to support dialogue, homogeneous and heterogeneous.

I have been immersed in interfaith since birth. My father, Tony, is native to the British Isles, being primarily English, with some Irish blood, enough for him to be a practicing Roman Catholic, whereas my mother, Fuengsin, was from Thailand and a practicing Buddhist. They got married in 1964, when it was still customary for the non-Catholic partner to give way in terms of how children were brought up in faith, though at that time the Vatican was reviewing such marriages.

But Fuengsin, who was for ten years a member of the pioneering Multi-Faith Centre in Birmingham, was not one to deny her training in Dhamma and so I was brought up with exposure to both. In fact, my first formal involvement in interfaith was as a teenaged resource person at the Centre, where I naively declared to an audience that included Catholic nuns that the Bible needed to be rewritten using relevant language. They were bemused.

I became more involved with interfaith activities whilst working at the University of Derby, ostensibly on technical projects, but I also helped with fundraise for and generally promote the Multi-Faith Centre there. I subsequently became Trustee of the International Interfaith Centre in Oxford (2000-2002) and was the Buddhist ‘rep’ on the working group directed by David Paterson, that led to the establishment of the Oxford Council of Faiths.

At the heart of interfaith is listening respectfully, which means giving full attention, being open and sincere. Whilst large gatherings can inspire, I tend to view as more effective small grassroots groups such as those in the Interfaith Encounter Association that meet on an ongoing basis for friendly and informative sharing. This is the kind of ethos which I would like to underpin social media activities.

Roles: Systems developer (as a staff member of the Humanities Computing Development Team, Oxford University Computing Services)

The brief: The Theology Faculty required a web-based system to manage various kinds of information relating to taught courses (undergraduate and postgraduate). A particular requirement was a convenient means for staff to maintain their own profiles with some basic formatting options.

Solution: An existing system, OxArch, written in PHP/MySQL, with ODBC connection to MS Access database, was identified as a suitable starting point as it was used for managing teaching in the School of Archaeology. It was repurposed and expanded for Theology. A novel JavaScript solution, NetWedit, was implemented for rich text editing.

Following a successful tender process, I was contracted to overhaul the website of the International Association for Religious Freedom (IARF), a UN NGO having general consultative status to ECOSOC with HQ in the UK.

The brief: To amalgamate relevant content from three existing sites, each developed separately during different periods and in a generally unwieldy state, into a single site that was current, covered the organisation’s activities well, and which would be easy to maintain. The new site would provide comprehensive coverage of the activities, styled with a look and feel similar to that of the United Nations.

Roles: After initial general consultancy to assess the current status, I undertook all the technical aspects of the project, from systems architecture and development, through to user training.

Solution: Working closely with the Secretariat Administrator, I implemented a new site to replace all legacy sites. I used WordPress (Multisite with subdomains), creating a custom theme derived from an existing one from the IARF US Chapter site. I also delivered experimental support for mobile devices using a theme switcher (before responsive designs became the norm).

I also oversaw the migration to a new VPS hosting platform with considerable cost savings. Detailed documentation was provided for administration, development and content authoring.

Formally, I have given a nod to lifelong learning by undertaking a postgraduate degree as a mature student, though these days I am largely an autodidact. I also try not to neglect physical health — what the Romans referred to as mens sana in sano corpore (sound mind in a sound body) — as I enjoy rambles in the Oxfordshire countryside, where many of my ideas surface. Spiritually, I’ve been trained to know that one’s mind is the book.

My main subject areas have been mathematics, computer science and religious studies, whilst maintaining an interest in any academic field that can address important problems in life.

• A mixture of ‘O’ levels and ‘A’ levels (Maths, Further Maths, Latin and General Studies) from King Edward’s School, Birmingham, which was probably the most formative period in my formal education.
